Music

We are very lucky to work with our peripatetic Music Teacher, Miss Kent from One Education Music Service in developing and delivering our Music curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to meet the expectations of the statutory National Curriculum and ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation

Our Music curriculum is a spiral curriculum, with key skills being constantly repeated. Children explore the inter-related elements of music including: dynamics, tempo, pitch, duration, structure, texture and timbre.

Children in Year 5 receive a 40 minute instrument lesson weekly where they learn the ukulele. At the end of each term, they present a performance to children and parents that showcases their skills.

We have a range of wider music opportunities available for pupils to access. These include, but are not limited to: Rocksteady Music tuition, Link Learning Music tuition, 1:1 instrumental tuition, School Choir and Young Voices lunchtime club.

Music has a high profile in school. Every year we perform a Musical Showcase for parents where children demonstrate their learning from the year; our school choir regularly perform in assemblies/shows and at school events and the Rocksteady musicians perform termly. Children also visit theatres/concert venues to participate in Music events. E.g. – Year 2 go out of school to watch the Halle perform and Year 6 visit the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester each year to participate in “The Big Sing” event.

We are very proud of how beautifully our children sing together – every Friday, Miss Kent leads a whole key-stage singing assembly where the children join in and sing learnt songs together. They always sounds just wonderful and we find these sessions are the perfect way to close the school week!  We are also incredibly proud of our wonderful school choir who meet weekly – they have developed a great repertoire of songs and love to perform as often as they can!

 Music in the Early Years

Music in the Early Years plays a crucial role in children's development, fostering creativity, emotional expression, and cognitive skills. Through engaging activities like singing, rhythm games, and movement, children enhance their listening, language, and motor abilities. Music encourages social interaction, teamwork, and builds confidence as children share their musical experiences with peers. It also aids in memory retention, pattern recognition, and attention span. Incorporating music into the curriculum helps create a joyful, inclusive learning environment, laying the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of the arts while supporting overall academic success and personal growth.
